Today is the last class day of the DFMA class at BCA.
overall i really enjoyed actually, for me as i have very little practical/ site experience, alot of the assignments n some lecturer presentations came in really handy. One of the ones i really enjoyed was the explanation of hot-dip galvanised; in which one person explained it as a " dip dip dip dip" process. A takeaway was for M&E, horizontal or vertical joint connections..
Today's assignment presentation was on M&E, and i think the one with alot of experience is actually H, the one from my group. the slides they have are really detailed, method statement 3d sort of imagery. really impressive i have to say.
no regrets on doing this specialist diploma. in fact i rem signing up just 1 day after the application was close? or was it one day before..
work wise is going quite excitingly. tom a park upgrading presentation, followed by pp precinct upgrading in the afternoon and gift exchange later in the evening at bros place. will be going earlier to work on the presentation tom, prob leave the house at 6am..buy a hotdog bun..
this time last year, think i was preparing for my brazil trip. in a blink, and events have flown one by.
one of the moral i think for the year, is the one thing you can take with you is upgrading of your knowledge..

Calm Monday
First week of the last month of 2017
So finally had the boa interview which went like shit. the board was caught up in a un-compliant issue of ventilation. this just made it seem like they had no minds of their own and only commented on " what was legally allowed or not".One take away i had though was that i should have just agreed with their comment. First question that should have come to my mind was " should i agree with them, and what is my intention" the discussion is not about whether or not i had the best form for the site, but rather " why didn't i..."so the best answer would have been, " if i had been told... i would have, but i wasn't told, so ..."
anyhow, interview was on a friday, and then friday evening, saturday to sunday night was off to Penang. Probably the best short trip of this year. Actually this i was thinking, after the 1 month trip to brazil, work was just crazy. i did take a while to settle in. went w L and S, we stayed in a airbnb in a superb location. ate all the char kway teow that was out of this world. got bitten by all the mosquitos, ate all the chendols. only thing we didn't do was the penang hill, so we ll be back. oh my but S and i did buy quite a number of rattan furniture! so much so that we had to send them back by train.
Still can't believe i made it through to December.
-Jan: Arrive back in sg
-Feb: zonk around, did more cycling tours
-Mar-May: Free lance
-June-July: zonk around
-August: started work
-December: still working :)

Last week of November 2017
the water has just boiled. the flick sound of the boiler just came on.
yet another cool night in the monsoon days to come. it has been raining almost every afternoon now.
there is just so many things to do that in the end i did something which is not even on the list of to do!
how crazy is that. anyhow things to do:
-plot penang places on a map
-re arrange DFMA assignment on slides.
-do perspectives in sketch up for the interview
work is coming along calm in the office. after the p.c. with all the boards printed, the ground force is still walking the ground to consolidate and settle the counts. design wise, it is shaping up. waiting for QS to come up with the first draft of the overall costing.
a new potential project tom. upgrading of playground. yet another one.

12th November Sunday
Eventful day, started at 9am when S came around to pick us all in sequence.
Public consultation was at Pasir Ris block 614 and then the other sides multi-purpose hall. All 17 gloss panels were up looking nice and clear. DPM was there as a VIP.
It was a meaningful experience with the residents coming in to vote on the form and giving their opinions about the proposed spaces. Somehow, previously for all the other companies, it has always been, just making things look beautiful. This adds a whole different dimension to it. All the stakeholders look happy enough.
Really glad that L came. this is a milestone in terms of project schedule.
Dinner tonight was nice, L kindly prepared the salmon and we even clean the house.
This company that i am at has really been nice.
People seem kind enough, and the bosses perhaps as project managers have plan things in such a way that everyone goes home on time, at 6pm.
Every weekday when i leave at 6, i still wonder how did i get myself here.
It s you against yourself and about asking the right questions i guess.
ok now back to preparing the drawing for the portfolio!

ArchiTours saturday
Today woke up to a sleepy saturday at 1230. tour was at 1.30pm starting from Neil road, the architours. So after a quick 2 slices cheese toast and coffee that L made, i took off ina taxi.
The 3 places are 368 Orchard road by Raymond Woo architects, Chin house terrace by Laud Architects and Bedok HeartBeat Hub by Ong & Ong. We took off in a 40 seater bus and the student docents gave us the free goodie bag, a cloth one with snacks and we walked over to the first place.
We met at the lobby where the architect himself gave us a description of the place. There was even slides for an introduction on glass being the starting concept, and exploration of it with different structural resolutions. The structure of the massing was lightest at the front, composite of steel & RC in the middle and RC at the back. The final structure was a mix of tree like cables, very fine and thin supporting a curtain of glass with the thinest mruullions ever. The v shape front box was said to increase the facade area and views of the plot. The owner as said in the words of the architect was very rich and was in no hurry to rent out the space. The 6th floor was beautiful, a double volume space with long views extended out to the far edge. No overhead lighting, all from the side, and the glass specialist Hugh Dorett ( spell wrongly?) an englishman also worked partially on the louvre. The marine grade structure of stainless steel had little problem with fire safety. Of 800mm thick, inside was an I column with an overall cladding. The glass had gas between to cut down heat, and the horizontal glass was fritted to reduce the heat gain.
The second house was beautiful. Owner was a couple who only required 2 bedrooms and wanted an entertainment space for 50 people. So the entry was a mezzanine of an open stairway. with a ribbon of a steel stair folding up to the 4th story of attic. Composed calmly with red bricks on the 2 sides; another wall erected next to the RC parti wall, from a width of 7m, width became 6.7m. The palette was black painted steel with generous sprinkling of indonesian teak ( top class european grade with minimal knots) Interior walls used pre-case concrete of 600mmx 75mm with plywood formwork. beautiful effect. The laminate was from EDL, smooth and warm to the touch and apparently healable by ironing on it. The skylight was made of structural steel beams to pass the household bombshelter requirements. An detail explained was the brick selection was chosen to use the other side instead of the good facing side. I spotted the singh brothers who were developers as well. Good carpentary detailing, and even the ceilings were made from the same teak. One nice detail was a beam across so as to be able to accommodate future glass doors to allow for separate partition to be air-con. Beautiful and comfortable.
The last felt the weakest of the lot. Or maybe it was because i was comparing to Kampung Admiralty by Woha which felt alot warmer. This one, had just opened and was mentioned to be simple and bare internally as it would have "community engagement" to paint on them. The first impression of the 1st storey felt underwhelming i have to say. The existing glass doors were black tinted so as not to compete with the existing shops? Strange logic. eastern facade had vertical sun shading and western was more horizontal. As we went up, 4th floor had a swimming pool that was inclusive, which had a ramp going down into the water, and even a separate children play area. 5th floor was the SG gym that had top quality equipment, almost 200sqm, with the latest cross-fit gym even , and it is suppose to have instructors who could tally with a diet or exercise plan as recommended by the polyclinic on the lower floor. The top floor had 6 courts or so of sheltered tennis courts. Another interesting point the A mentioned was that raft foundation was chosen so as to reduce the noise caused to the neighbouring HDB. It was build using a BIM model which the contractors had as well. the facade had quite a bit of green planting which was cast in situ. Somehow overall, the space internally felt a little detached from the exterior though, perhaps it was the proportion? The sunlight didnt penetrate too much somehow. Something odd was that the structurally heavy pool was on the considerably higher floor, and the reason was to reduce the travelling of the elderly upwards. To me i was thinking it was either 1st floor or not much difference between 2nd or 4th no?
Overall i was glad i went for the tour. Made a few friends, a timber seller and a french architect lady who just moved fr kl to sg. Inspiring works all in all.

Sept 25th Yet another class day of Dfma
Todays class was on PBU. prefabricated bathroom unit.
The lady lecturer mentioned that it was started by HDB in the 1990s, and the first private residential to use it was in 2004.
An interesting point is that of the 19 different trades done for a typical bathroom, 13 can be done off site. And based on the type of PBU, whether purely concrete or mixed with dry wall, steel frame, affects the weight from 2 tonne to 9 tonnes.

2 weeks into the job
So it is 9.30pm on a tuesday and here i am sitting all showered, having had dinner at home. This is what life can be still as an architect. Now, is that cool or what?
For dinner L kindly gave me one bento box and that was delicious. Beef and spinach with rice, very moist and tasty.
the daily routine of taking Bus153 has become something quite unconsious now. Instead of changing a bus and train and bus again for 45mins, i rather sit one bus and have it at an hour or sometimes 45mins. Somehow one thing ive come to realised is that it is important to prequalify whether or not something is worth doing.
Work was calm and i continued on modelling out the overhead bridge with lifts and linkway. quite enjoyable. lunch was at the redhill hawker center which we walked over. i had a curry chicken that was only chicken so that was not too good. Perhaps i will eat that banana tonight. The upgrading for the lifts is still in the proposal stage but i was told to start reading up on the regulations as when and if we do get that, i will have to get 7 approvals or is it to do 7 submissions in 1 month...to the different authorities. This will be a crash course on authority submissions indeed.
i am looking forward. meanwhile think i better read up on the regulations again..
